About this place
Tucked into a quiet backstreet north of Senso-ji, in the area known as Kannon-ura, the izakaya Kotoki serves hearty, chewy udon alongside an array of casual small plates. A favorite at lunchtime is the curry udon, combining a fragrant Japanese dashi broth with a spiced curry soup that clings to thick, springy noodles. Diners can float freshly fried, crispy kakiage tempura in the broth, or opt for simple warm kake udon or chilled bukkake noodles rinsed in cold water to appreciate the clear stock.
A staple accompaniment to udon, and equally popular as an evening snack, is the kashiwaten chicken tempura served with tartar sauce. Tender, marinated chicken breast is fried until plump and matched with a mellow tartar sauce that pairs naturally with beer or highballs. The menu also features reasonably priced seafood and home-style bites, from savory sesame mackerel (goma-saba) and horse mackerel namerou to dashi-simmered oden.
Drink options extend beyond draft beer to a considered sake list gathered from across Japan, including Taketsuru from Hiroshima and Chiyomusubi from Tottori. Whether settling into a counter seat for a solo meal or sharing plates around a table, guests find a calm atmosphere supported by warm hospitality.
